I retired in November and Phebe retired at the end of January. The day after she retired we set off with a Hyundai Sonata packed to it’s maximum weight limit and left Montana for a month’s stay in Orange Beach, Alabama. We have a condo rented here overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It’s low season right now so it’s reasonably affordable. We brought some boat projects with to keep busy but mainly the idea was to just get away for a while.

We’ve had long walks on the beach and have watched many a sunrise and sunset. Just what the doctor ordered. We had the good fortune one night of seeing our first “green flash”. What a treat. Sorry, no picture, but they really do exist!

Phebe has been working on new covers for our interior cushions. The 1989 blue denim was nice in its day but needed to go, especially with Noodin being our full time home. The new upholstery will be a tremendous improvement.

I’ve been working on getting this blog going and also on splicing up some dock lines and an anchor bridle. I had originally planned on buying the Mantus bridle but wasn’t completely happy with their choice of stainless steel components. I was able to buy a galvanized chain hook from Mantus and sourced the rope and other components elsewhere. This was my first real attempt at splicing 3-strand so I warmed up splicing eyes in some used anchor line and turning it into dock lines. All in all, I think the bridle turned out pretty good. Phebe will sew on some nylon webbing for chafe protection on the junction splice when we get home.
